With Caissons Done, Halsted Pointe Moves On To Foundation Work

Now that caissons have been drilled and filled, the foundation phase of construction is underway for the first Halsted Pointe residential tower at 931 North Halsted Street on Goose Island. A team of excavators are active on the site, and their progress shows straight, precise edges, some with steel sheets driven into the ground. As they dig, haulers are utilizing a new ramp built into the south end of the site accessed from Halsted Street adjacent to North Branch Street.

Caisson work on the 46-story tower got started in late April, almost six months after permission to begin came through in November of last year. On May 1, a tower crane permit hit the Chicago Data Portal and was issued on May 12. Last week, a construction hoist was permitted. The permit to erect the full tower has been pending in the portal since January 13th.

Onni Group is the developer and general contractor, with McHugh Concrete on board as the concrete contractor. They are building a design by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. Onni Group likes to light up their Chicago tower cranes, so we’ll wait for this rig, a Liebherr 420 EC-H16, to go up and see if it’s decorated at night.

  1. This is sick. Especially the Ped bridge. Bringing life to Goose Island!

  2. Artist’s conception?
