Yesterday we told you that construction is underway for the first tower at Halsted Point on Goose Island. Today, we’re showing you. Just a short canoe trip up the North Branch of the Chicago River from the casino construction site, a crew has started drilling and filling caissons for the first residential tower on the sprawling lot.
Onni Group is the developer and general contractor. They got permission to start the foundation from Lower Level 2 up to the sixth floor back in November, and we’ve been watching the site very closely ever since. A visit on April 12 offered a glimpse at the first couple rebar cages rolled up in a corner of the lot, with a large crawler crane to move them around, but no caisson rigs. Well, they’re here now.
The full building permit has been pending in the Chicago Data Portal since January 13, and a hoist permit hit the portal last week. What we haven’t seen any sign of yet is a tower crane permit, and we’re pretty sure this 46-story building will require one. And remember, Onni Group likes to put lights on their cranes; maybe we’ll see one lit up at night here.
There first three photos in the gallery are from the April 12 visit. The rest were taken Tuesday afternoon, April 28th.

That is glorious, thank you.
Great Photos. I especially like the one using the Caisson Rigs as framing for the Ballys tower in the the near background and the Willis (I mean Sears, I’m a new arrival to Chicago) in the far background. I live just blocks from the river in this part of the city and see the progress all the time. Thanks again for all the coverage.
This is such a change to Chicago. I can’t wait for completion and to see if it starts up any more development on the island.
I agree, I’m excited to infill this vacant industrial area as well with a new livable neighborhood (minus all the new cars they’re inviting on the island).
The title gave me a chuckle. Fantastic photos!
Thanks, Daniel! Excellent work, per usual.
Lol great article! well said!
Ok, NOW I believe it!
