The Chicago City Council has approved plans for an upcoming affordable senior housing building at 6151 South University Avenue in Woodlawn. Located on the corner with East 62nd Street, the proposal was revealed earlier this year as part of a redevelopment of multiple vacant lots owned by Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Led by 5T Management as well as the church, the project will be known as WBC Manor and is being designed by local-firm Barry Architects. The larger of the two lots in the development sits north of 62nd Street and will hold the new six-story structure which will wrap around a central courtyard with a landscaped garden. Behind this will be a small four-vehicle parking lot.

The ground floor of the building will contain a large lobby, exercise room, office, tenant storage, lounge, community room, and some units. The project as a whole will hold 46-residential units made up entirely of one-bedroom layouts. Residents will also have access to a large roof top deck as the southern portion of the building caps out above the fourth floor.

Additionally, residents and congregation members will have access to a 20-space parking lot on south of 62nd Street and behind the existing church. The building will be clad in a mix of brick and metal panels. At the moment, no budget has been announced nor a timeline. With the approval in hand, permits may be applied for once financing is secured.
