Demolition is underway on the two-story brick building at 1019 West Grand Avenue in West Town. Most recently the home of Allied Valve Industries, the building was issued a demo permit by the City of Chicago on September 19 of this year, the first step toward the construction a new residential building at 455 North Carpenter Street.
Located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Carpenter Street, 455 North Carpenter Street will be a five-story, 72-unit apartment project from Northbrook-based developer Range Group. Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, the building will include ground-floor retail space and resident parking. McNea & Sons Construction will be the general contractor for the new construction; National Wrecking Company is the demolition contractor.
The Chicago Data Portal shows two pending permits for the new build; one for the foundation, and one for the full building. While no formal construction timeline is known, the start of demo work is a good first step toward getting these units built.
Residents will find stops for the CTA’s Route 65 bus located right outside their door. They can use that bus to connect to the Grand Blue Line subway station just under half a mile to the east. Routes 8 and 56 buses are also available at the same junction of Grand/Milwaukee/Halsted.

This stretch of Grand needs development. Excited for this one. A bunch of opportunity in this small pocket.
