Details have been revealed for the multi-phase expansion of the Puerto Rican Arts Community Center at 3000 N Elbridge Avenue in Avondale. Located on the corner of Central Park Avenue, the center is operated by the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA), which is also leading the expansion efforts recently approved by the City Council.

The PRAA has been operating in Chicago for over 25 years, offering cultural programs that reach more than 30,000 participants annually through schools, parks, and its three community centers. One of these is the gallery in Avondale, housed in a former fire station, which the PRAA has operated for the past 15 years. Now, the organization has purchased the empty lot and two adjacent buildings.

The first phase will focus on the vacant lot to the east and the one-story building at 3010 Elbridge. This building will be restored and expanded toward the rear to accommodate a new gallery space and restrooms. The existing garage at the back will also be converted into support space.

To connect the two gallery buildings, a new vestibule will be constructed along the streetfront, designed to match the surrounding storefronts. Behind it, a newly paved courtyard will be created for outdoor events and will include a retractable cover. The first phase carries an estimated cost of $3 million, and fundraising efforts are currently underway.

A future second phase will redevelop the two-story structure at 3006 Elbridge, converting it into artist residences through a separate fundraising campaign. The plans, designed by LBBA, have now been officially approved by the city and can move forward. The PRAA anticipates an eight-month construction timeline, aiming to break ground and complete the work by next year.
