A demolition permit was issued by the city to demolish a one-story commercial building and greenhouses at 5338 South Mason Avenue in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood near Midway Airport. According to the permit, which was issued on April 4, All Concrete Contractors of Bridgeview is named as the demo contractor, at a reported cost of $10,000.

Soukal Floral & Greenhouse, whose main shop is located at 6118 South Archer Avenue, posted on Facebook last month that the greenhouses will be closing permanently, but they hope to expand the South Archer facility.

The permit names A & SL Construction as the property owner, but there don’t seem to be any real estate transactions associated with the site. The assigned address, 5338 South Mason, appears to be not the commercial property, but a bungalow just south of the shop. Real estate records indicate the home is owned under the Soukal family name, so it is possible the home and greenhouses are considered one property.

There are no pending permits in the Chicago Data Portal for the west side of Mason Avenue’s 5300 block, so it is not clear if the site is to be redeveloped once the commercial building and greenhouses are torn down.

  1. This is false information. The address of the greenhouse is 5336 s. Mason. Not 5338. It is separate from the house which is not going anywhere. This is what happens when AI creates articles. Then mean Facebook trolls with too much time on their hands talk negatively about a business that’s been in the neighborhood for over 100 years.

The demolition permit in the Chicago Data Portal is issued to 5338 South Mason Avenue. That’s the address I used for the story, which I wrote, not AI. Nor did I say anything about the home going anywhere. And what do you see that I wrote that’s negative about the business?

    • Bet you’re a real hoot at the neighborhood block party. Or… the #1 culprit complaining to the police when cleanup isn’t done by sunrise the day after.

The only times reviews for a business are negative is typically when the food sucks, the owners are closeminded, or a significant ripoff of bad services. If you find this happening often, maybe look back at the establishments you support.

Sometimes people write negative reviews because they enjoy the troll. Regardless, please don’t go after other readers.

  2. You posted to a neighborhood page where the administrator talked negatively about it. And now it cannot be taken down because she’s the admin…
