A three-story, two-unit residential building is under construction and topped out at 1739 North Whipple Street in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The homes are less than two blocks away from the northern edge of Humboldt Park and its myriad of recreational activities; they replace one of two side-by-side grass lots that served as side yards for neighboring homes.
Permitted by the City of Chicago on June 14, the project will be delivered by developer and general contractor MK Construction & Builders. The architect of record is Pro-Plan Architects of Park Ridge, IL, who have included a rooftop deck and a basement in the main building. A detached two-car garage will be added off the alley, but work on that has not yet begun. There is no garage deck mentioned in the building permit. A steel stairway at the rear of the residential structure connects all three floors.
Residents of 1837 North Whipple will live less than two blocks from access points for the 606/Bloomingdale Trail. For transit service, a two-block walk south to North Avenue leads to the CTA’s Route 72 bus. For north-south travel, the Route 94 bus is almost six blocks east at California Avenue. Elevated train access isn’t nearby, but there are options. The 72 bus can be used to connect with the Damen Blue Line at Damen/North/Milwaukee almost a mile and a half away. The California Blue Line platform is almost a mile north, at California and Milwaukee; the 94 can be used as a connection to shorten the walk. In between those two platforms is the Western Blue Line platform, with is about a mile east. The 606 trail provides a scenic walk to that station.
