A new construction permit was issued by the City of Chicago on December 12 to build a new three-flat at 2616 West Haddon Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The long-time owner of a single-family home here is responsible for the new development. The permit application was filed on October 28, and has an estimated construction cost of $500,000.

The three-story frame building, designed by Red Architects, will include a basement, but the permit is very specific about there not being a rooftop deck included in the plans. A three-car masonry garage will be built off the alley to replace the current frame garage. Revolution Home Remodeling is listed as the general contractor. There has not been a demolition permit issued yet for the two existing structures.

Residents of 2616 West Haddon will be within a one-block walk of public transit via the CTA’s Route 70 bus along Division Street. For north-south travel, the Route 94 bus is two blocks west on California Avenue, and the 49 and X49 buses stop two blocks east, on Western Avenue. The nearest L platform is the Division Blue Line stop. It’s almost a mile and a half away, to the east, but the 70 Division bus can be used as a connector.

This is an example of an area that would be served so well by having a circle L line. A mile and a half to the nearest L is just ridiculous. It’s well past time to get really serious about our need for 2-3x as good of public transit in this city with clean, safe, frequent and reliable transit. It’s the only way we’re going to grow well as a city while reducing vehicular ownership and traffic.
