New demolition permits have been issued for the upcoming Pui Tak School at 3118 S Canal Street in Bridgeport. Sitting near the intersection with W 31st street, we originally covered plans for the project back in 2022 as they were revealed. Now the school is getting ready to move forward with the new campus designed by SOM and Wight and Company.

The multilingual school itself was started in 1953 in order to equip young learners academically and spiritually to be future leaders according to their website. However, their current 12-classroom home at 2301 S Wentworth has passed its intended capacity and lacks many modern facilities. Thus the move to Bridgeport which represents a larger demographic shift in the neighborhood as well.

The new school will replace a combination of vacant lots and multiple three-story buildings, having scored a demolition permit for each one. Plans call for a four-story structure rising 55 feet tall set back from the busy road, creating a new drop-off loop and parking lot for faculty and staff.

Inside will be 20 large classrooms that can support 400 students and 45 staff members. This will be joined by a library, art, science, language, and music rooms, as well as a large two-story gym/auditorium on the north end of the building that will appear as a floating lantern over the parking lot below. Similar to the existing school, this will also serve the community after hours.

The building will be clad in a mix of clear and translucent glass and colored metal panels, while pushing green initiatives with solar panels, rainwater systems, motion detectors, and more. The school has already fundraised over $3 million for the project, with hopes to begin construction by the end of the year or early 2025.
