Plans have been revealed for the new campus of the Pui Tak Christian School at 3118 S Canal Street in Bridgeport. Located just south of the intersection with W 31st Street, the new structure will replace two-existing buildings and a large surface parking lot in the quickly changing neighborhood. Being led by the school themselves, the internal team has partnered with both SOM and Wight and Company on the design of the upcoming facility after a multi-year $3.1 million fundraising campaign.

Founded in 1953, the multilingual Pui Tak School serves to, ‘equip young learners academically and spiritually to be future leaders for God’s kingdom’ according to their website. They are also affiliated with the Chinese Christian Union Church and serves as a center for the community from their current building at 2301 S Wentworth Avenue in Chinatown. The 12-classroom facility is at capacity with five of them being shared with other users thus requiring them to be packed away everyday, as well as lack of restrooms, and busy roads for drop-off and pick-up.

The new school will be set back from the road with greenery, a new drop off loop, and additional parking, rising four stories and 55-feet tall. Inside of the white panel, wood, and glass-clad structure there will be room for 400 students and 45 staff members featuring 20 large classrooms, a library, double height gym, art, science, music, and luggage rooms, as well as a large cafeteria. Promoting green technology, the roof will hold solar panels, an accessible green roof, rainwater retention, motion detector lights and more.

Located 1.2 miles away from the current school, students can reach the site on CTA bus route 31 on the corner, route 44 via a three-minute walk, route 8 via an 11 minute walk, and the CTA Red Line Sox-35th station via an 11-minute walk. Serving pre-k to 8th grade, the current plans will need to pursue zoning approval with an expected groundbreaking in 2024 or 2025 as they continue to raise funds for a full build out.
