Foundation work is underway at 1220 West Adams Street for the Kensington School West Loop. Having received a new construction permit from the City of Chicago on August 26, general contractor Charles Hall Construction has begun ground-level work with a hand from Taylor Excavation. The permit calls for a three-story building with an unspecified number of off-street parking spaces. The new school replaces a former Boy Scouts of America office building and retail shop, which was demolished this spring.

As is the building Kensington School is developing in Wicker Park, the West Loop location is designed by Naperville firm Charles Vincent George Architects. A South Loop facility is also planned. The West Loop school is expected to open next year.

Staff and faculty, along with parents wishing to use public transportation to escort their children to and from school, will find Routes 20 and 126 bus service within a two-block walk. The CTA’s Racine Blue Line platform, three blocks south, is closed for renovation, but should reopen before construction of the new school is complete.

  1. I thought the original building was architecturally interesting, but it wasn’t landmarked, so it is what it is…
