The City of Chicago has issued a new construction permit for Kensington School to build a new educational facility at 1220 West Adams Street in the West Loop. The permit, issued on August 26, calls for a three-story building with outdoor off-street parking; the number of spaces is not specified.

As is the building Kensington School is developing in Wicker Park, the West Loop location is designed by Naperville firm Charles Vincent George Architects. The permit, applied for in January of this year, lists Charles Hall Construction of Westmont as the general contractor, and estimates the cost of construction at $4 million.

The structure previously on this site was a Boy Scouts of America office building and retail shop. It received a demolition permit on June 6, with Taylor Excavation carrying out the teardown. Their work is completed, and the lot is ready for construction prep, with excavators remaining on site.

Staff and faculty, along with parents wishing to use public transportation to escort their children to and from school, will find Routes 20 and 126 bus service within a two-block walk. The CTA’s Racine Blue Line platform, three blocks south, is closed for renovation, but it’s scheduled to reopen before construction of the new school is complete.

  1. Is it really just the same design?

  2. It’s a pity to lose that interesting building, considering all of the vacant land and parking lots in the general area. I realize the economics of it, but variety adds a lot to a city.
