A two-story addition atop the Neely Building at 871 N Franklin Street on the Near North Side is underway. The steel frame is taking shape on the roof of this latest phase of the North Union project from JDL Development.
Built in 1922, the Neely Building was designed by Fugard & Knapp, the firm also responsible for the design of The Moody Church on N LaSalle. It was as the home the Neely Printing Company. Most recently, it was part of the Moody Bible Institute campus. A single-story masonry addition to the south of the original three-story was demolished early in the North Union development process.
The addition is part of the building’s transformation into a 44-unit residential building designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. Retail space will be integrated into the first floor. Power Construction is the general contractor.
Residents of the renovated 871 N Franklin Street will be less than three blocks from the Chicago L platform and its Brown and Purple Line trains. The Route 37 bus is a one-block walk west, the Route 156 bus stops two blocks to the east, and the 66 bus stops less than three blocks to the south.
