A new major lease has been announced for Fulton Labs at 400 N Aberdeen Street in Fulton Market. Sitting on the corner with N Ogden Avenue on the northern end of the neighborhood, the space will be utilized by the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) as part of a greater life sciences push in the city. The university itself is leading the efforts for their first off-campus research venture, designed by Perkins & Will.

The lease marks a major moment for the Fulton Labs project, as IIT becomes the first academic institution to join the building which is also the future home of the CZ Biohub from Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg. This is also the university’s second major commitment to off-campus research, as they are also one of the schools involved in the upcoming Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) within The 78.

Taking a total of 34,295 square-feet on the seventh-floor within the Trammell Crow developed structure. The university plans to utilize the space to focus on using science, technology, and design to address global issues according to Provost Kenneth Christensen. The wet lab space will work on sensors, electrochemical energy, and other biology related subjects as the university offers a robust biomedical engineering degree.

This research directly connects to the CZ Biohub which is working on analyzing inflammation in the human body by creating bioengineered tissue and deploying microscopic sensors. The lease is also a major win for Chicago’s growing biomedical scene, with Portal Innovations also being in the building. Construction on the space will be led by Power Construction with a completion date of late summer 2024.
