The Arts Lawn is an upcoming park project by Arts + Public Life (APL) aiming to provide a space for new events and gathering in the Washington Park neighborhood. The one-acre property, which was formerly an empty grass lot, is now in the final stages of completion.

This new outdoor space will have an open lawn area, laying the stage for community-centered arts programs managed by APL, including film screenings, live theater and performance, outdoor music, youth education, and arts marketplaces. There will also be various seating alcoves and greenery interspersed throughout.

Site Design Group designed The Arts Lawn in partnership with Span Studio, who oversaw much of the visual elements integrated into the park. During construction, artwork from South Side artists Rose Blouin and Edo was showcased on the temporary construction fence banners.

The Arts Lawn is a part of a growing collection of cultural and commercial spaces on historic Garfield Boulevard, also known as the Arts Block, operated and managed by Arts + Public Life. This collection includes the Green Line Performing Arts Center near the Arts Lawn, the Arts Incubator, and L1 Retail Store.

  1. Does anyone know if the Green Line Arts Center next to the Currency Exchange cafe is still going to be built? I was surprised to see that the building was demolished.

  2. Correction* does anyone know if anything is planned for the empty lot between the arts incubator and the L1 retail store?

  3. The Green Line has been built! It is adjacent to the Arts Lawn, and opened in 2018, they have lots of free programming. I don’t know about the lot next to the retail store.
