A proposal was submitted for review on Wednesday to the Chicago City Council to designate the historic Pioneer Arcade in Humboldt Park as a protected landmark. The three-story building is located at 1535-45 N Pulaski Road and was designed by Danish-born Chicago architect Jens Jensen. Pioneer Arcade was originally a recreation center and featured 20 bowling lanes, a billiard room with 35 tables, and retail spaces. The establishment acted as a social site for the neighborhood. The building has a distinctive Spanish Baroque Revival style and an ornate terra cotta facade.
The proposed designation would prevent any alterations or demolition of exterior elevations. The proposal does accommodate the upcoming six-story affordable apartments project by the property owner, Hispanic Housing Development Corp. The developer plans for a 61-unit senior community.
