Updated plans have been revealed for a new educational building at 2633 W Addison Street in Roscoe Village. Located on the intersection with N Rockwell Street bound by the North Branch of the Chicago River to the west and Clark Park to the south and east, the project is re-utilizing the existing daycare building on the site. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is behind the project that’ll serve four-year-old students addressing the current Pre-K needs in the area, while adding capacity inline with the city’s goal of offering universal Pre-K across all neighborhoods.

Following CPS’ four-year roll-out plan which began in 2019 and looks to create an equitable outcome for all four-year-old’s in the city, the project is part of an additional 71 classrooms dedicated just to Pre-K required to meet the current demands. The new spaces will be operated by nearby Audubon Elementary School who offers full-day programs as a part of the initiative. However the immediate area needs roughly 260 seats of which 100 already exist, with 140 being created with the expansion and the remaining 20 coming from accepting additional students at programs currently not at capacity.

The two-story building will feature seven classrooms of which two will be fully ADA accessible, but all will contain their own restroom, storage spaces, water fountain, and a small kitchenette with dual-height sinks. The classrooms will have large windows so parents can peer in when visiting as well as have up to date technology including iPads according to Block Club. The rest of the structure will hold large common areas, offices, a reading space, and a large multi-purpose play room, the exterior will also receive a new fenced off playground and garden space.

A majority of the existing parking lot will remain the same with 60 vehicle parking spaces available after all of the work is completed. Construction on the $6.1 million project is already on its way and is expected to wrap up by this fall in order to allow for kids to enroll in the upcoming school year. Although new nearby proposals will likely create an increase in demand, for now more families can look forward to the expanded program. The school will work with parents to determine whether their children will attend Pre-K at either the new facility or the existing school as enrollment kick-offs later this year.
