Construction permits have been issued for a single-story Walmart Training Academy, located in the parking lot of an existing Walmart Supercenter. Situated at 8331 S Stewart Avenue in Chatham, the new 15,495-square-foot facility is being developed by Walmart Real Estate Business Trust.
The project received approval in April this year from the Department of Planning and Development, with minor changes to the larger scope of the Planned Development site. These changes included but were not limited to a slight increase of the larger parcel’s floor area ratio, a reduction in the number of parking spaces from 721 to 604, and the addition of two new signs.
Mariah Beth Meyer of BRR Architecture is the listed architect of record. The structure will be primarily clad in face brick to complement the look of the larger supercenter. Secondary facade elements consist of long walnut panels, and a glass window wall near the entrance.
As far as nearest transit, bus service is available for Route 24 via a two-minute walk northeast to 83rd Street & Holland. Further to the north is additional access for Routes 8A and 79, as well as Route 29 to the east. Meanwhile, rail service is available for the CTA L Red Line at 87th station via an 18-minute walk southeast, as well at the Metra Gresham station via a 19-minute walk southwest.
International Contractors Inc. is the general contractor for the $9 million construction. A completion timeline has not yet been revealed.
