The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the residential development at 2548 S Federal Street in Douglas. Known as the SL Solar Lofts, the project will rehabilitate the existing Rapid Roller Company factory built in 1928 as well as expand it vertically to allow for more residences. Having exchanged owners this past spring for $3.5 million, its new owners and developer 548 Capital have partnered with local architects Gregory Ramon Design Studio on the updated design.

Dubbed SL Solar Lofts, the site is bound by W 26th Street to the south, the Metra Rock Island tracks to the west and Stevenson Expressway to the north. The project will rehab and partially expand the existing industrial building into apartments. The previous owner, JDC Group Inc., recently sold the property to its current developer 548 Capital who has taken over the previously detailed plans from Red Architects.

A rezoning application has been submitted for a new residential redevelopment of an existing factory building at 2548 S Federal Street in Douglas. Developer JDC Group Inc. is working with Red Architects to turn the old Rapid Roller Company factory building into apartments in the growing neighborhood. Bound by S Federal Street to the east, W 26th Street to the south, and Metra tracks to the east, the 17,500-square-foot lot is surrounded by the I-90 and the Stevenson Expressway.
