Site prep and early foundation work have commenced for an upcoming senior community center at roughly 4711 South Calumet Avenue in Bronzeville. Sitting just south of the intersection with East 47th Street, the upcoming development will replace half of a large vacant lot just steps from the CTA Green Line’s 47th station.

The project is a collaboration of various city entities, with the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) being the leader. They are working with Chicago-based Future Firm on the building’s design. The two-story structure will sit at the center of the site and be wrapped by 38 parking spaces to the north and east sides, with a small courtyard to the south.

Inside will be a large lobby atrium anchored by a community lounge. Around this will be a small waiting room, gift shop, offices, restrooms, nursing room, two multi-purpose rooms that can be combined, an indoor patio that opens to the aforementioned private courtyard, and a 150-seat dining room with a stage that will be connected to a large kitchen on the ground floor.

The second floor will include additional office space, a tech room, movie room, game room, fitness center, two activity rooms, and a large terrace. This will allow the 25,000-square-foot structure to provide classes, meal services, health services, wellness programs, education, and more to local citizens over the age of 60 years old.

The building will be known as the Bronzeville Regional Senior Center and take design cues from South Side buildings like the D’Angelo Law Library at UChicago. DFSS will operate the new facility, with local hiring applications found on the project’s website. Construction will continue through late 2027, with a December 2027 opening date.
