Glass Still Going Up, But The Tower Crane Is Down, At 566 West Van Buren

566 West Van Buren October 2026 updateTwo levels of glass and zero tower cranes at 566 West Van Buren.

Chicago lost another of its tower cranes over the second week of September when the rig was removed from the 566 West Van Buren construction site. As that was coming down, more glass was going up around the lower levels of the 199-unit apartment building coming online soon. Most of two rows of glazing, on the second and third floors, have now been wrapped, while the ground floor remains open to the elements.

The tower crane at Southbridge (2305 South State Street) was removed in September as well. By my count, that leaves seven of them in the air in the city, although 410 North Elizabeth has a stub and I haven’t been over there since the first weekend of last month. Any one know if it’s up yet? As for what I can verify, we have:

Cranes have been permitted for 1628 West Division (no work had started on this project as of September 13) and 1022 West Jackson (caissons are just getting started.) There’s a pending permit for 7 West Elm, and with caissons underway, that should come through any day now.

Did I miss any?

  1. This boy went up real fast, impressive work

  2. Really nice glass – not as ripply as so many other new buildings.

  3. 410 N Elizabeth was still not up as of last Thursday. Just the stub. But there were 5-10 people actively working on the ground.

  4. love that this turned into a tower crane appreciation post!
