Chicago’s newest tower crane has been raised at 931 North Halsted Street, ready to send construction vertical on the first residential building for Halsted Pointe. You can now add a ninth crane to Wednesday’s list of eight in operation around Chicago.
During our most recent site visit mid-month, there was no sign of the first section while excavation was underway, so we can’t say when the stub was planted. But it wasn’t alone for long, with assembly beginning on Tuesday, June 23.
Here are photos from the first day of assembly, all taken from the east bank of the North Branch. We arrived when most of the tower had been erected.

Of course we came back to see more, Thursday, expecting the crane might be fully assembled. But Wednesday’s weather may have caused delays, and we got here just in time on Thursday to see the boom (or jib, or arm) lifted into place. By the time we had taken a full lap around to the east, the counterweights were being set in place. Can’t officially say this crane is in operation yet…that might not be the case for a couple days…but we’re happy to consider the Halsted Pointe tower crane erected. Congrats, Onni. Gonna light it up next?
Here are Thursday’s photos, from the lifting of the jib to setting the counterweights. Yes, there are a lot of them:

This is what a walk around the Halsted Pointe tower crane looks like (and then to lunch in River North.)

Thank you for the photos! Love these type of updates.
If it isn’t too much of a hassle – can you also include the proposed renderings in these posts? I become giddy looking at construction starts alongside the renderings, so I think it would be a nice touch. Thanks for all you do!
