The Tower Crane Is Up At 566 West Van Buren

The tower crane has been erected and is helping progress go vertical at 566 West Van Buren in the West Loop. We last stopped by the site on June 3rd, which turned out to be the day the crane was planted in the ground. Full assembly was expected the following week, and when we visited again yesterday, the Potain MR418 luffing crane was doing the heavy lifting. Naturally, 3-D progress is ramping up now that the tower crane is busy.

566 West Van Buren marks the eighth tower crane active in Chicago’s skies (though we haven’t been able to get out to O’Hare to see if that one’s up) and the only luffing crane on the job. The others?:

  • 400 Lake Shore, which is expected to begin coming down the last day or two of the month. (Streeterville)
  • Bally’s hotel tower, which is topped out, so that will likely come down soon too. (705 West Chicago Avenue, River West)
  • 1221 West Washington, another topped-out project. (West Loop)
  • 2305 South State (South Loop)
  • Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences building at Loyola University (6551 North Sheridan Road, Rogers Park)
  • 1010 South Wells, the first tower in the Riverline development (South Loop)
  • The east crane at McDonald’s Park, the Chicago Fire’s new stadium. The west crane has been permitted. (1331 South Wells Street, South Loop)

Also permitted, but not yet erected:

  • 1331 South Wells – this is the McDonald’s Park east crane, permitted on June 5th (South Loop)
  • 1628 West Division, permitted June 2nd. Work had yet to begin when we went there on May 24. (Wicker Park)
  • 410 North Elizabeth, permitted February 19. This one is under construction at long last. (Fulton market District)
  • The 1901 Project at the United Center, permitted May 7th. (1901 West Madison Street, Near West Side)
  • The O’Hare crane was permitted on December 12, 2025. We could use some help from those flying in or out of the airport. Let us know if you spot a tower crane. (10000 West O’Hare Airport)

North of the West Loop, on Goose Island, Onni Group and McHugh Concrete were stacking yellow sections atop each other Tuesday for a Liebherr 420 EC-H16 tower crane for Halsted Pointe. That rig will build the 46-story residential tower at 931 North Halsted Street. We hope to have a full set of photos once that setup is complete later this week.
