Caissons and foundation work are done and the first signs of verticality are rising from the ground for the residential building at 566 West Van Buren in the West Loop. What’s more, Wednesday marked the arrival of the Potain MR418 tower crane base. A concrete crew from Adjustable Concrete Construction was pouring the crane’s pad with help from a few red-and-white-striped Ozinga trucks that came and went while we were watching.

Elsewhere within the construction fencing, the first few concrete columns are forming. Square rebar cages instead of round, though we spotted a round column near the southwest corner of the site, are being enclosed in wood forms, and some of them likely have concrete in them by now.

All this is for the ground level of what will be a 12-story, 199-unit apartment building with 42 parking spaces from Riverside Investment & Development, designed by Antunovich Associates. They got their three big permits this winter when  the foundation/superstructure, full building, and the tower crane all came through in February and March. A hoist permit has been pending since April 21.

The foundation permit for 566 West Van Buren hit the Chicago Data Portal way back in July 2022; we’ve been waiting a long time to see this former parking lot transition into an active constr4uction site. Riverside’s page for the project anticipates an opening early next year.

  1. I love it when a new building perfectly blends with its surroundings. It’s a perfect example of how not everything needs to ‘stand out’!
