The concrete foundation has been set for the three-flat under construction just west of Graceland Cemetery at 1406 West Cuyler Avenue in Lake View. General contractor Skal Construction & Development got started on site prep and pile driving last month, as the residential building by GSL Design begins to take form. The new homes replace a long-vacant lot, though it had been improved with a small garage off the alley at the rear of the property until recently.

A construction permit issued January 10 calls for a three-and-a-half-story building plus basement with three dwelling units. It is not clear when the site’s old garage was demolished, and it will not be replaced. Instead, there will be a trio of surface parking spaces. A metal stairway will connect steel decks on all upper floors, and a masonry porch will lead to the building’s front entrance.

Residents of 1406 West Cuyler will be within one block’s walk of CTA bus service via Route 80 on Irving Park Road. One more block east from there, at Irving Park Road and Clark Street, are stops for the Route 22 Clark bus. Routes 9 and X9 are four blocks west at Ashland Avenue. The Route 80 Irving Park bus can be used to connect with the Irving Park Brown Line elevated platform to the west and the Sheridan Red Line platform to the east. Each station is a little more than half a mile from the construction site.
