Three new construction permits have been issued to Habitat For Humanity Chicago to build single-family residences on Lockwood Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. The first of the two-story homes was permitted on April 7 for 421 North Lockwood, and the following day, 425 and 427 North Lockwood received permits. The three applications are dated a week apart in March, and each permit shows a reported construction cost of $320,000 apiece.
Construction will take place on a long-vacant lot just north of the freight train and Green Line tracks that run parallel to Kinzie and Lake Streets. Plans for the four-bedroom homes were created by architecture and design firm Canopy, and will include detached two-car garages at the back of the lots. Privacy fences are the only other features detailed in the permits.

According to Block, who were present at the groundbreaking ceremony Monday, Habitat For Humanity will build four more homes less than two blocks away on West Ferdinand Street. Construction is anticipated to begin on those in spring 2026, when these first three on Lockwood Avenue are expected to be completed.
