Now that the tower crane is part of the team, construction has gone vertical at Aberdeen Crossing in West Town. Contractors Contemporary Concepts and Adjustable Concrete have risen to the second floor of the future seven-story apartment building at 1100 West Grand Avenue. Wildwood Investments is the developer here, with bKL Architecture designing the plans.

Caissons were permitted back on August 10 for the 99-unit project, with a tower crane permit issued the following week. The full building was permitted on October 11. Foundation work continued through most of the winter before the eventual crane erection in March. Plans for the site include ground-floor retail and 28 parking stalls, plus one bicycle storage space per dwelling unit. These will be rental apartments, with an expected completion date yet to be announced.

Aberdeen Crossing residents will find stops for the CTA’s Route 65 bus located right outside their door. They can use that bus to connect to the Grand Blue Line subway station just under half a mile to the east. Routes 8 and 56 buses are also available at the same junction of Grand/Milwaukee/Halsted.

  1. Is there a floor threshold when tower cranes are required. I feel like a lot of the 5 story buildings don’t have a crane, and then this one at 7 stories does

The concrete contractor decides if a situation calls for a tower crane when it’s a shorter building. The two-story Apple Store on Michigan Ave had one.
