Glass Installation Is Underway At The 400 Lake Shore North Tower In Streeterville

The first week of April 2025 has already been a month of milestones at 400 Lake Shore in the Near North Side’s Streeterville neighborhood. Over the weekend, the construction team jumped the tower crane, adding six new sections to extend its height. On Monday, the first panels of glass, the ones visible Sunday inside the lower few floors of the tower, were installed on the north façade of the third level above ground.

By Tuesday afternoon, the first row was nearly complete, except for the panels where the second construction hoist will be erected. That cladding will have to wait until much later.

The future 72-story tower appears to have reached the 15th or 16th level, with the concrete core a couple stories higher. Now that glass work is underway, it will chase concrete progress as the building rises. With a floor poured every three working days, it will be a challenge to keep up.

  1. I think we are all happy to see the bay windowed style of these installations!

  2. I just rode the bus pas this site this morning (135) and it looks absolutely amazing. The photos don’t do it justice, it looks great in-person! Really looking forward to watching this one go up!

  3. Really nice glass. Is there any treatment planned for the concrete between the windows or will they leave the concrete raw?

  4. Could end up being spectacular or a missed opportunity. The glass is very reflective and will create unique reflections and interact with changing sky conditions. With the sculpted tower form, the result could be amazing.

Concerned though, about the glass thickness. The images provided show severe distortions of the reflected surroundings. Perhaps the photos were taken during extremely windy conditions, but the results raise some questions. Also not convinced with the dark mullion finish. It’s a very harsh contrast to the solid (ceramic?), infill panels. Perhaps a bronze mullion would have been more appropriate, mediating between the highly reflective glass and the neutral infill panel. Time will tell.

  5. Wow! Just gorgeous! I have been waiting since 2007 for this site to come to fruition!
    Love the bay type windows!!!!

  6. Daniel, I have unobstructed view of 400 LSD site from my 21st floor condo. The view is not as dramatic as your photos from ground level, but it provides detail and an appreciation you don’t get from ground level. My building has unobstructed view from 16th floor outdoor terrace. Let me know if interested.

Always interested in seeing what other people can see. You can send photos to me anytime at buildingupchicago.com, and let me know if you just want me to see them, or if you’re interested in having me include them in an article.
