The City of Chicago has issued a renovation permit for reconstruction of the CTA’s Austin Green Line elevated platform. John Burns Construction Company, the firm that completed the new Peterson Ridge Metra station last summer, is named as the general contractor. Design work was performed by Epstein.

The permit was issued on March 28 to the address of 351 North Austin Boulevard in the Austin neighborhood. The scope of work is extensive, with a focus on improving ADA accessibility by addressing interior and exterior ramps. The station was rebuilt in 1962, but has not been upgraded since.

Unlike some other station rebuilds, it appears Austin will remain open while work is performed. The permit states they will “reopen (the) Mason Avenue stationhouse to serve as (a) temporary station entrance during construction.” The main entrance will be closed in June, with the expectation that major work will continue into early 2026.

The city and the CTA hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on March 31 to celebrate the start of construction. The reported cost for this portion of work is reported as $15 million, with the total expected to reach $25 million.

  1. I guess the gentrification of Austin is continuing. Only took 63 years to get it renovated. That was probably when it was first built upon the work to move the Lake Street line off of Street level and up to the C&NW right-of-way.

And this was before the color system for naming the L lines. A lot of us still call it the Lake Street L.
