We continue our 2023 countdown with the 30th place going to the Rush Specialty Hospital at 516 S Loomis Street in Little Italy. Located on the northwest corner of the intersection with W Harrison Street, the building is receiving its final touches as construction quickly wraps up prior to winter. The project is a collaboration between the Rush University System and Select Medical, with GWG3 Architecture working on its design.
The project is the second building on what used to be a student housing complex for the nearby university and hospital, joining the nearby Joan and Paul Rubschlager building which took the 24th place on our 2021 countdown. Rising five-stories and 93-feet in height to the parapet, the center will bring over 130,000 square-feet of new medical space focused on inpatient acute care.
The ground floor will feature a drop off zone connected to a large central lobby, complemented by a large dining room with a patio and an ambulation therapy center with an outdoor course. The floors above will contain 56-beds for comprehensive rehabilitation and 44 for long-term acute care, with communal lounges, medical offices, and staff zones.
The long rectangular structure is clad mostly in a white aluminum panel system, with curtain walls at the ends and long bands of windows on the sides. Users will have access to a 70-vehicle parking lot in the rear, with plenty of space for a third building which could contain up to 850,000 square-feet per the site’s zoning.
Future users will also have access to CTA bus route 7, 9, 126 as well at the CTA Blue Line Racine station within a five-minute walk. The $110 million facility was built by Power Construction, with a full completion expected early 2024.
