An existing retail structure at 431 N Dearborn Street is currently undergoing extensive interior and exterior renovation work, with new windows having now been installed. Built in 1948, this two-story River North building owned by Friedman Companies long served as the Getschow Company’s engineering headquarters. Most recently, it housed Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, which closed the location in 2020. The Group is leading the current revamp, which will consist of two new restaurants.
In 2022, La Grande Boucherie, a French brasserie originally from New York, agreed to lease out a section of the building with 400 seats. Eater Chicago reported an interior design by Legeard Studio reminiscent of the Belle Époque period from late-1800s France. This precursor style to the Art Nouveau movement will be showcased via the use of wood accents throughout, ornate white ceilings, and a second floor that’s partially open to below.
La Grande Boucherie will share the establishment with a second smaller Japanese restaurant known as the Omakase Room, which will offer 10 to 12 total seats and a minimalistic, open interior.
Bus service can be accessed via the adjacent Dearborn & Hubbard intersection, offering service for Routes 22 and 36. Additional bus service within walking distance includes Routes 2, 3, 26, 29, 37, 62, 65, 66, 121, 125, 143, 146, 147, 148, 151, and 157. The Red Line at Grand station is a three-minute walk northeast, while the Brown and Red Lines at Merchandise Mart station are a seven-minute walk southwest.
The architecture firm Barker Nestor was the listed architect of record. Crane Construction Company is the general contractor for the ongoing work, whose total reported cost is listed as just under $4 million. An updated completion timeline is not currently known.

Wow, stunning interior work. Who knew we could still craft such beautiful new building interiors. I wonder what the new exterior will ultimately look like if it’ll try and match the beauty of the interior.
Any renderings available for the exterior work?
I’m shook by those interiors. Neoclassical is back baby!
art nouveau
An interesting renovation into a neo-classical interior that could have happened in an actual neo-classical building but is instead wholly artificial?
Why are you finding the negative in a good thing? The more of these are done the more it can be done, they are case studies in feasibility.
looks art nouveau
Those ceilings are chef’s kiss. I’ve been looking for my new River North spot ever since the Rainforest Cafe shuttered. I will only dine at a table on the upper level so that I may scoff, jeer, and look down at the peasantry below. Can’t wait!!
Also anyone notice the glassed-in meat rack on the main floor, will that rotate on a conveyor belt? Bravo times a thousand!!
