With a full renovation permit now issued, Vienna Beef has kicked off a major new initiative at 2501 N Damen Avenue in Bucktown. Unofficially listed as 2409 N Elston Avenue in the permit, the $20 million redevelopment project will revamp the site the company had occupied for over 40 years before its closure in 2020. Previously, there were failed plans to replace the property with a Drive Shack driving range.

Designed by Hirsch MPG, the project now called ‘Vienna Beef Plaza’ aims to revitalize the structure and its surroundings. Initial renderings reveal that the masonry facade will be partially restored and updated with green-colored panels and new industrial-style glass storefronts. The existing ground floor, once used for loading and production, will be transformed into a versatile retail space that can be divided up to five times. Additionally, it will house a factory store selling bulk meats and merchandise, alongside a restaurant specializing in fast food featuring Vienna Beef products.

The renovation will introduce significant changes to the exterior of the site as well. New sidewalks, tree-lined green spaces, and a reconfigured parking lot capable of holding more than 200 vehicles are in the works. Furthermore, the previously mentioned second-floor office space is designed to accommodate over 50 employees, with move-ins expected by the end of this year. The retail and restaurant spaces are slated to open in 2024. General contracting will be executed by Evans Construction Services LLC.

  1. It’s still auto-oriented, but it’s better.
