The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has announced a new batch of stations to receive minor renovation work across the city. As a part of the system’s ongoing Refresh & Renew initiative which started in 2019, the authority under current president Dorval R. Carter will embark on some much needed maintenance work across all lines except the Yellow or Skokie Swift portion. The program itself is part of the greater ‘Meeting the Moment’ Action Plan the system has enacted.
In hopes of providing riders with an overall more comfortable transit environment, the work will begin later this year as temperatures warm up with crew performing initial inspections of each location to identify any issue that could be resolved either immediately or in the near term. Overall the work can include concrete repairs, utility work, removing outdated equipment and fixtures, and potential upgrades to signage, lighting, surfaces, and more. In total 29 stations will be affected as follows:
Red Line: Sox-35th, Howard, Sheridan, Addison, Clark/Division
Blue Line: Jefferson Park, Irving Park, Belmont, Logan Square, Division, Monroe
Green Line: Laramie, Cicero, Indiana, 35th-Bronzeville-IIT
Brown Line: Armitage, Chicago, Francisco, Montrose, Irving Park, Addison
Orange Line: 35th/Archer, Halsted
Pink Line: 54th/Cermak, Pulaski
Purple: Linden, Main St.
Loop: Merchandise Mart, Washington/Wells
The CTA operates 145 rail stations across the city with more on the way as we look towards the upcoming Damen Green Line station and the Red Line extension, though it is currently suffering from an overall reliability and safety issue. The overall $6.5 million in work will also be complemented by the system’s yearly power washing team, this group will work overnight from the spring to fall and power wash every station at least once a month. I would love to know how they’re gonna fix up Belmont station. Probably one of the grossest stations I’ve seen regarding pigeon poop coating everything. It’s a severe health hazard.
Perhaps they could do something like the netting at the Purple line Davis station.
It keeps the birds from nesting on the track structure thus eliminating their ability to leave their droppings behind…

I feel bad about Belmomt pigeon poop situation because to the CTAs credit, they mop it down very regularly.
They need new bird spikes or just straight up culling. There’s a new alderman in the 44th you can write.
The Blue Line O’Hare Airport station is the showcase of Chicago to the whole world. Pls make the Blue Line truly world class by making the station well-lighted, well-ventilated and with good signage to guide visitors where to go to. Above all, pls get rid of the vagrants,beggars and homeless people on the Blue Line. . Visitors to Chicago are scared to be harassed,, mugged,and pickpocked by these stinky guys.
And where do you propose we put these homeless people? You can’t just “get rid” of humans.
In shelters, in mental-health facilities, in any of the myriad options the city provides to care for these individuals. Not further depressing the CTA’s already reduced ridership numbers.
When, if ever will the north and Clybourn station ever be updated under the 1993 rehabilitation act????

We should all be thankful the CTA over the last 2 or 3 decades has kept up a steady pace of rebuilding and renovation. Our system is in remarkably good shape compared, say, to New York, whose pubic transit has a reported $100B backlog of maintenance.

Literally just replacing light bulbs and re painting. This should be frequent maintenance, and they’re glorifying it as a refresh? Are you guys down that bad?
