Permits Issued for Rush Medical Center Expansion at 516 S Loomis Street

A full construction permit was issued this week for a new five-story medical building at 516 S Loomis Street in Little Italy. Named the Rush Specialty Hospital, the facility will further augment the Rush University Medical Campus, and will be located on the same block as the nearly completed Joan and Paul Rubschlager building. Between these two locations, there is a third site that will be able to support a future development with up to 855,000 square feet, nearly twice as much as the Roan and Paul Rubschlager building.

Spanning 135,000 square feet, the building’s functions will be oriented around inpatient acute care, housing 56 beds for comprehensive rehabilitation and 44 beds for long-term acute care. Accessory programming will comprise of dining and lounge areas for patients, staff, and visitors.

HDR Architecture is the architect, whose white aluminum and glass facade reflects other Rush University buildings like the clover-shaped main hospital building.

There will be an on-site parking lot for 70 cars, with the I-90 expressway adjacently north of the site. Other transit options in the area include bus stops for Route 7 directly to the south at Harrison & Loomis, as well as CTA L service for the Blue Line at Racine station via a two-minute walk north.

Power Construction will serve as general contractor for the $110 million project. An anticipated completion date has not yet been revealed.
