Interior work is underway on Cunningham Hall, a nine-story residential building originally designed in 1955 by famous German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Located at 3100 S Michigan Avenue on the northeastern edge of the main campus in Bronzeville, the structure was built by Mies van der Rohe as part of his campus plan and used as on-campus apartments. Illinois Institute of Technology is leading the renovation of the building.

Designed by Dirk Denison Architects, the building is being renovated into new student housing after being unused for multiple years. Rising nine floors, the building’s exterior brick and glass facade will be rehabilitated with new windows installed.

Since our last update in December 2020, interior work has made significant progress. Framing has been finished, with drywall installation mostly completed. Lighting and other finishes look to be active in the building and interior lighting fixtures have been installed on some of the lower floors.

The construction hoist remains on the northern end of the building, with the final enclosure of the building awaiting the removal of the hoist. On the ground floor, the inset lobby is still obscured by temporary construction framing.

The nearest CTA L station is the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stop, serviced by the Green Line, a five-minute walk away. You can access the 31, 1, or 4 CTA buses at the corner of E 31st Street and S Michigan Avenue, steps from the property.

Gilbane Building Company is leading the construction. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the Fall 2021 semester.
