The caissons permitted for Loyola University’s new Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences are in full swing along North Sheridan Road in Rogers Park. The entirety of the block-long construction site spanning from West Loyola Avenue north up to West Albion Avenue is busy with construction activity for the six-story facility.

Power Construction is the general contractor on the build, but right now, it’s Keller who is most visible on the site, as their distinctive yellow rigs drill into the earth where Campion Hall once stood. Also standing out during our site visit was a lone Prairie Materials hauler, delivering concrete for Power, who are doing their own concrete contracting for the build.

The caisson and foundation permit was issued to the address of 1144 West Loyola Avenue on January 30 of this year. The full building permit has been pending in the Chicago Data Portal since January 16. On February 20, a pending permit for a Potain MD485B model tower crane hit the portal, using Campion Hall’s address of 6551 North Sheridan Road. Chicago doesn’t see tower cranes this far north very often.

According to a press release from the university in May, the building will address “current and future needs in nursing education, plans for the building feature specialized classrooms, research spaces, advanced simulation environments, and welcoming spaces for gathering, studying, and collaboration.” Woodhouse Tinucci Architects designed the building for the school. Loyola received permission to demolish the Campion Hall dormitories in October of last year. The six floors above ground will include over 150,000 square feet of education space, with the basement level adding another 40,000 square feet of usable space.
