A foundation permit was issued Friday to allow Loyola University to begin construction on the new Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences. Addressed in the permit as 1144 West Loyola Avenue in Rogers Park, this is the former home of Campion Hall, which was demolished last year for the new facility. The construction site occupies the entire east side of the block spanning 6550 to 6600 North Sheridan Road between Albion and Loyola Avenues, one block north of the Loyola Red Line platform.

Friday’s permit comes through with a reported cost of $11.2 million. The six-story building is a design by Woodhouse Tinucci Architects, and Power Construction will be the general contractor. The foundation permit calls for 100′-deep caissons and 150′-deep earth-retention systems. According to a press release from the university in May, the building will address “current and future needs in nursing education, plans for the building feature specialized classrooms, research spaces, advanced simulation environments, and welcoming spaces for gathering, studying, and collaboration.”

The full permit for the facility hit the Chicago Data Portal on January 16. It allows for work to continue from the second floor through the sixth level, and includes interior and exterior work, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, and more. A permit for the stormwater management system has been pending in the portal since September.

The six floor above ground will include over 150,000 square feet of education space, with the basement level adding another 40,000 square feet of usable space. Loyola predicts completion of the project in time for the fall 2028 semester.

  1. Cool-looking render. Nice depth with the inset windows and brick aesthetic.

That old building was not particularly good-looking, so this will be an improvement of looks and will eventually give us more nurses, which we definitely need.

  2. Cheers and thanks to all the Loyola nurses who will finally have their own space!

  3. I know I’m screaming into the void, but can Loyola please do something ANYTHING with the vacant lots on the residential side of Loyola Avenue that they use as a junkyard and makeshift parking. Seriously, the temporary demolition fence around Campion Hall with the cool banner is more care than the university has every shown the off-campus lots in decades.
