The permit to begin construction was issued by the city on December 9 of last year. That was preceded by permission to tear down neighborhood stalwart Fast Track, which was permitted for demolition on August 1, 2024. The restaurant closed for good in 2022 after slinging diner food to locals and visitors for more than 30 years. Demolition began in late January, and was complete by early February.

General contractor Chicago Common Partners LLC got started on the new build late this past winter with caisson work. Designed by Axios Architects, the new building will hold all but one of its residential units on the second through seventh levels, with eight apartments on each floor. One penthouse unit will be located on the top level, along with the building’s amenity areas. The ground floor will contain 2,000 square feet of retail space, just two parking spots, and storage for 49 bicycles.

629 West Lake is two blocks west of the Clinton Green/Pink elevated platform, and within a four-block walk of the Ogilvie Transportation Center (Chicago O.T.C.) and its access to UP-N, UP-NW, and UP-W Metra trains. Several bus stops surround that station, including Routes J14, 60, 124, 125, 157, and 192. The Route 56 Milwaukee bus stops right in front of the building, at Lake and Desplaines Streets. The north-south Route 8 bus runs two blocks west along Halsted Street, on the other side of the Kennedy Expressway.

  1. Always sad to see a great mural get covered up, but this project really feels like a great addition to the area. West Loop Gate could be such a fantastic area, but it needs more projects like this so that it feels less like the Loop and more like an extension of West Loop or its own distinct and vibrant neighborhood.

  2. I often think that it’s too bad that they have to put final cladding on these buildings. I think it would really look nice if they could find a way to keep the X bracing visible in the buildings final form.

  3. 48 units with only 2 parking spaces? More of this, please!

  4. Am I dumb or is this already topped out
