The Chicago Plan Commission has approved DePaul University’s new athletics building at 2300 North Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park. Located at the intersection with West Belden Avenue, the project has been in the works for over a year and has come under scrutiny due to its replacing a handful of vintage housing structures occupied mostly by students.

Led by the university and designed in collaboration with Antunovich Associates and HNTB, the three-story building will become the new home of the school’s basketball team. The ground floor will feature a large weight room, hot/cold spa, office space, nutrition prep area, digital network offices, and more.

Nearly half of the second floor will contain offices, lockers, and conference space for the school’s coaches. This will be joined by lounges and lockers for the team, a mental health clinic, and ample space for student work, studying, and photoshoots. Above this will be the multi-story gym with two regulation basketball courts, team meeting rooms, and cardio rooms.

A small fourth-floor player lounge will also be included. The 72-foot-tall structure will feature a winged roof with solar panels and extensive glazing along the gym floor. The lower levels will be clad in brick with detailing meant to mimic the surrounding buildings. Additionally, the project will rebuild the existing sidewalk with added landscaping and seating.

Overall, the project is expected to cost around $42 million and serve roughly 215 students once completed. Additional funding will go toward renovating the Sullivan Athletic Center and McGrath-Phillips Arena nearby. The project is slightly behind schedule but aims to break ground after the current school year, with an anticipated two-year construction timeline.

  1. This is the best idea DePaul has had since they built a basketball arena “closer to campus”…next to McCormick.

  2. Not mentioned in this article is the multiple orange listed historical homes in addition to a courtyard apartment that are being demolished to build this. I am typically an eager YIMBY, but I can’t help but NIMBY this project.

  3. This is such a huge disappointment… THERES A SURFACE PARKING LOT HALF A BLOCK AWAY. how is this good planning id like to ask the “planning commission”.

That question has been asked over and over again, and DePaul’s answer is “we don’t want to build this there.”

  4. Multi-use historical buildings replaced by essentially a single-use energy suck. Not a smart or sustainable move. DePaul should be smarter than this.

  5. I mean we’re talking about school that had campus property overtaken by pro hamas fans for weeks, how smart can they be? 😂

    • The reason nobody respects your side is because you can’t even argue in good faith. Disgusting person to be in support of genocide. Seek god.

  6. Can we move the historical buildings that are there?

  7. Yecch. I’m a strong YIMBY but this right here, sucks.

  8. How could this one cost 42 millions and the one in south lawdale cost 38 million dollars the one in Lincoln Park looks 100 times better
