A demolition permit issued for an 1883-built residence at 1934 North Halsted Street in Lincoln Park will clear a lot for a new two-unit building. Real estate records show the home was sold in August for $1.325 million. Permission to raze it came through on October 16, naming Carlos Group as the demo contractor at a reported cost of $20,000.

A permit pending in the Chicago Data Portal since September 10 calls for a new three-story, two-unit masonry “apartment” building, though for-sale condos seem more likely given how much was spent to purchase the property. The only architectural detail is the inclusion of a detached two-car frame garage to replace the one to be torn down. Winslow Development Group LLC is the developer and will act as their own general contractor, working with plans by Craft Architecture of Hammond, IN.

As of Friday, October 17, the home is already surrounded by demolition fencing, so the teardown appears imminent. It is presumed new construction will then get underway immediately following demolition and excavation.

  1. Ugh noooooo stop destroying chicago

  2. Once upon the time, during the days of Daley and Rahm, we had something called a highrise boom. There was confidence in investing billions of dollars in the city.

Now that has all retreated and we are spending time focusing on 2 flats. That was always going on in the background, but the highrise development drew all of our attention. I hope we can return to those days…..

    • Real estate market fluctuations have nothing to do with the current mayor. There are endless sites for posting political commentary where posts like the one above can find a home.
NIMBYs with too much time on their hands, however, have too much to do with what gets built.

  3. This seems like a terrible idea.

  4. This is a travesty. They’re destroying a 2 unit house to replace it with another 2 units. That makes a lot of non/sense. Only in Chicago logic. Look up the recent sale photo. That house is beautiful livable interior, full of original woodworks and trimmings, and that gorgeous fireplace. I assume they will salvage the fireplace for resale, but that’s about it. Shame, shame, shame, but this is the typical Chicago mentality.

  5. Beautiful home. Pity.

    Why? Disgraceful.
