Steel and masonry are rising above the sidewalk for the new residential development at 3739 North Clifton Avenue in the Wrigleyville section of Lake View. What at first resembled goal posts, as one passerby opined, at the front of the lot now looks a little less stark as brick and block work start to rise with it.

United Chicago Builders is the developer and general contractor for this three-story plus basement, three-unit building by Red Architects. A construction permit issued  in May calls for a rear steel porch and stairway, and a steel porch out front facing Clifton. A masonry three-car garage with a rooftop deck will be built at the alley off Grace Street. It is not clear if these will be rental apartments or for-sale condos.

The new residences replace a 1900-built frame home that the developer purchased last year for $950,000. The new construction permit came with a reported cost of $850,000.

3739 North Clifton is located one block north of the left field bleachers at Wrigley Field. The Route 22 bus has stops one block west along Clark Street at both Grace Street and at Waveland Avenue. A four-block walk around the outfield of the ballpark leads to the Addison Red Line elevated train platform. East-west bus service is available two blocks south at Addison Street via Route 152, or three blocks north to Route 80 stops on Irving Park Road.

  1. Another ugly building and so narrow. So knocked a home to build another cold and very cookie cutter building.

  2. Excellent. A single residence replaced by a 3-unit is progress. Keep it up, my friends.

That is an appalling trade-off – great white brick…classy.
