626 South Wabash Rises Above The L In The South Loop

The residential tower at 626 South Wabash in the South Loop has progressed to the underside of the second level. The core is at the second story of what will eventually be a 19-story building with 164 dwelling units. That progress is courtesy of general contractor Clark Construction, their concrete contractor Adjustable Concrete, and the tower crane they erected at the site in June.

626 South Wabash was Chicago’s eighth crane when it was erected in late June. Two more have been added to our skies since.

Co-developers DAC Development and Melrose Ascension Capital are looking to draw student residents to the building by offering 60 four-bedroom apartments geared toward co-living arrangements. There will also be 80 efficiency units and 24 two-bedrooms in the Antunovich-designed tower. A multi-level podium will contain 60 parking spaces, with about 3,100 square feet of retail space on the first floor.

As structural work begins going vertical, a permit to install a construction hoist came through on July 17. Permits first began rolling in back in 2022, but work didn’t get started until March of this year. With an anticipated construction timeline of 18 months, that puts the tentative opening in fall 2026.

  1. R.I.P Dexter Building, I hope they put some kind of commemoration to the landmark that once stood on the lot.
