The residential conversion of the former West End Woman’s Club building at 37 South Ashland Avenue on the Near West Side is now complete. Known henceforth as the West End Club, it is open to residents, with the first move-ins taking place on the first of May.

The original two-story building, constructed in 1904 and most recently the home of the United Electrical Workers union from 1948 through 2023, was converted to apartments by ZSD Corp. They received a permit from the City of Chicago on May 15 of last year to renovate the building into 22 dwelling units and to add an addition above the existing structure.

The new development is the creation of Architect of Record Andrew R Wang and Design Architect IS Architects. ZSD served as their own general contractor, and according to them, eight of the units are spoken for, with 14 remaining. A mix of one-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom floor plans are still available, with each unit having the same number of bathrooms as bedrooms. Ten of the residences have private outdoor balconies or terraces.

The project has its own website, where rental availability and application information can be found.

No parking is included in this renovation. Residents of the West End Club will have bus access on CTA Routes 9, X9, and 20 within a one-block walk of home. The nearest elevated train is the Ashland Green Line platform at the north end of Union Park. The Illinois Medical District Blue Line platform is a short walk southwest down Ogden Avenue. The Racine platform’s western access on Loomis Street is also about half a mile away, but that will soon close for station renovation.
