The full permit to complete construction on The Lake social club in River North was issued by the City of Chicago on Thursday, May 29th. Caissons are complete and excavation is currently underway at the site, located at 205 West Superior Street. The permit was applied for on January 14, and it comes with a reported construction cost of $16.8 million.

The entity of The Lake Property Owner LLC got a foundation permit for the five-story private club in November of last year. Bulley & Andrews is the general contractor, with GREC Architects named as architect of record.

The five-story club will include restaurant space, a spa, and an undisclosed number of hotel guest rooms. There will be a lower level, if not a full basement.

The permits for The Lake mention nothing about parking on site, and no parking was included in either of the two buildings that were demolished to make room for it. As this is appears to be a members-only facility, the possibility of valet parking service seems likely. There is some street parking on Superior Street and Wells Street, and the site sits one block from the Chicago Brown/Purple Line elevated platform, while the Route 37 bus is located a block south at Wells and Huron.

  1. Would like to see a rendering of the new club building. Hoping they’re going to give it some architectural interest given they tore down something of architectural interest.

I’d love to see one too. There’s a bootleg rendering floating around out there, but I’ve been told no official rendering is ready to be released. A photo of the finished building might be the closest we get to a rendering.

construction question, what is the purpose of the plastic on the existing building to the south, is that a weather coating vapor barrier?

  3. I understand GREC being the local architecture of record, but is Robert Stern now out of the picture?
