A tower crane permit was issued on April 23 for the residential development at 626 South Wabash Avenue in the South Loop. While that was coming through, general contractor Clark Construction and the crew from Thatcher Foundations were busy drilling and filling caissons for the 19-story tower permitted way back in 2022.

A joint effort by DAC Developments and Melrose Ascension Capital, 626 South Wabash will contain 164 dwelling units comprising 80 efficiency apartments, 24 two-bedrooms, and 60 four-bedrooms. That volume of four-bedroom units is geared toward student living as well as multi-family housing. A podium will include about 65 parking spaces, ground-floor retail opportunity, and dedicated storage for 100 bicycles. Two floors of amenity space in the Antonovich Associates-designed project will include a pool deck, a business center, and an exercise room.

Student-living units here are within easy walking distance of Roosevelt University, Columbia College, East-West University, and other institutions of higher education. The Harrison Red Line subway station is one block west, below the intersection of Harrison and State Streets. Due to its proximity to Grant Park just one block east, there are more than a dozen CTA bus routes within a two-block walk in any direction. No completion date has been announced, but is likely to occur some time in 2026.

  1. Exciting to see something finally happening here and they’ll be blocking Columbia’s overpriced “dorms” which is a bonus

  2. Good. That area (S Wabash & S dearborn) are just lacking and not realizing it’s potential. Alot of infill can be done in such a central area
