A pair of permits issued in March by the City of Chicago will allow the South Side Community Art Center to begin work on an addition to the Bronzeville building they’ve called home since 1940. A demolition permit issued April 1 calls for the removal of the coach house at the rear of the 1892-built structure, and a renovation permit issued March 13 authorizes foundation and site work for a three-story addition.

Designed by Future Firm, the T-shaped addition will add 10,000 square feet of new space and feature a rooftop gathering area. The three-story portion will sit directly behind the original building, while a shorter addition, set back from the street, will occupy the side yard to the building’s north.

Berglund Construction Company and Brown & Momen will perform new construction, and Structure Re-Right is named as the demolition contractor. SSCAC estimates the cost of the addition and the original building’s renovation at $15 million. They hope to complete the transformation by late 2026. You can read more about the project at the South Side Community Art Center website here.
