A new construction permit was issued February 13 to begin work at the Malcolm X College West Side Learning Center in the Austin Community Area, just half a block west of the Garfield Park neighborhood. City Colleges of Chicago held a groundbreaking celebration for the facility back in November, after applying for the permit on March 28, 2024. With GMA Construction Group on board as the general contractor, work can now begin.

The Community Center for Teaching and Learning will be built on what is now the front lawn of the Learning Center, located at 4624 West Madison Street. The permit calls for a single-story addition with an assembly hall for both school and community use, and a variety of support functions.
Also included in the scope of work are alterations to the existing facilities. Updates on the main floor will build out new restrooms and upgrade the interior finishes. On the lower level, alterations will be made for an intermediate distribution frame (IDF) room. Exterior renovations include replacing the roof, and adding rooftop mechanical equipment. Bailey Edward is the architect for the updates and addition.

Parking is limited at the West Side Learning Center, but it is served by a number of public transit options. The Route 20 CTA bus has stops both eastbound and westbound on Madison Street, directly in front of the school. A two-block walk to Cicero Avenue leads to the Route 54 bus, as well as the Route 392 Green Line/UPS Hodgkins Terminal Pace bus. The Cicero Green Line elevated platform is just over half a mile northwest at Lake Street; the 54 bus can be used to connect to train service there. The 54 and 392 buses can also be taken southbound to the Cicero Blue Line train, about three-quarters of a mile away at the Eisenhower Expressway.
