400 Lake Shore Progress Rises Above The Drive

400 Lake Shore construction February 2025400 Lake Shore, viewed from Polk Bros Park across Ogden Slip, has risen above DuSable Lake Shore Drive

No longer hidden below sidewalk level, 400 Lake Shore has risen above eye level along DuSable Lake Shore Drive, on its way to 72 stories. While that may be distracting to drivers zipping up and down The Drive, it’s quite a show for everyone else, as LR Contracting and BOWA Construction continue their work on the Streeterville residential tower.

As the pictures show, construction work is starting to go vertical in a big way here. Crews have been busy setting up the south hoist tower, which was permitted in November, with a revised permit coming through late in January. There will be a hoist tower on the north side of the construction as well. That one also was permitted in November, and was also revised in January.

There is a pending permit in the Chicago Data Portal to make the first tower crane jump, which will likely happen early in March, with a half-dozen or so sections being added to the Liebherr 420 EC-H 16 rig. There’s also a brand new pending revision permit, applied for on Friday, February 14, for the “removal of pool on level 45 and other revisions of proposed amenity spaces to white box.” It also indicates a future permit will address the interior buildout, so it seems likely residents will still get a swimming pool.

  1. Very exciting to see this vertical progress! Never thought I would see the day.

I’m so excited about this one! The impact it will have on the skyline at the mouth of the river cannot be understated. I’m also stoked for the new park that will develop as a result of this project. This area of Streeterville connecting DuSable Harbor, Navy Pier Flyover, Ohio Street Beach, Jane Adams Park + Olive Park is truly beautiful!

  3. They should bring back the landscape architects who created Lakeshore East’s park. Based on what has been shown, I fear the current plans will butcher such a mesmerizing site location.

2nd-year LArch majors were producing more cohesive plans at my college. Consider some of the cool proposals from the previous arch competition for the Spire Hole. That site needs some major activation. It’s begging to be dramatic.

  4. I imagine the Tribune East Tower project will surely die with this two high rise building project underway.

  5. Great photos! Thank You Daniel!

  6. I am excited to see this hole finally being filled in, but am I the only one who is feeling underwhelmed with this project?

Like NEMA, I feel that we’ll never see its matching tower, especially given the financial landscape of the past few years and the direction it’s been heading. Fortunately the tower being constructed is the taller of the two, but it will always have a sense of being incomplete.
