Leasing has begun for the new residential development dubbed ‘Straits Row’ at 633 S LaSalle Street in Printers Row. Located just south of the intersection with W Harrison Street, the new mid-rise replaced an empty lot across from the back of LaSalle Street Station. The project was led by Singapore-based Q Investment Partners and Melrose Ascension Capital.

Designed by local firm FitzGerald, the building has been in development for years as it changed developers halfway through construction after a long delay during which work stopped due to financial issues. After a quick pivot and securing a new loan, construction resumed and has now been completed on the 18-story and 230-feet in height.

The building contains 132-residential units, however a majority of these will be fully-furnished co-living units. This means each bedroom within a unit is rented as an apartment, with all bedrooms sharing the common spaces like the kitchen and living room. With this in mind, there will be a total of 358 private residential spaces.

Because of this, the developer expects rents to be around 20-percent cheaper than similar buildings in the neighborhood, though traditional units will also be available. Residents will have access to various amenities including a large coworking space on the ground floor, a rooftop deck with fire pits, lounge, and more.
With Clark Construction on board as the contractor, finishing touches are being completed with move-ins expected to begin in the next few weeks.

This is a total VE hack job. The original rendering was quite beautiful and this is just….blech
I certainly agree with Zaptron about the design – but the co-living idea is interesting. I see lots of recent college grads renting here just as if they were in the dorms. The idea may spread further up the age chain. Any idea where the name Straits comes from?
Thank you for highlighting the positives and potential that this new type of living space can provide. I sometimes get sick of the pessimism and borderline/explicit racism of folks claiming that these types of units will invite a certain type or less desirable kind of tenant. We should be open to any and all possibilities considering the ongoing housing crisis in this city and our country.
My 23 year old niece lives in an apartment like this in Los Angeles. I don’t think it is an apartment building, but more like a town house development.
@Jeremy, @Leslie – it certainly will be interesting to watch. My own 24yo son is thoroughly sick of roommates and cannot wait to get his own place.
