A two-story frame residence at 1448 West Diversey Parkway in Lake View is getting two new leases on life. While many buildings its age in Chicago are being demolished, this two-unit, 143-year-old structure is not only getting rehabbed, it’s also getting a new addition.
A renovation permit issued by the City of Chicago on May 30 of this year calls for a two-story addition to the property, along with a two-story rear steel stairway and porches, plus a redone front porch. Underpinning the foundation is also included in the scope of work. Zed Architects of Chicago is listed as the architect of record for the renovation, with Elite General Contractors named as general contractor.
A permit to demolish the existing garage was issued April 15. That work has been completed, again by Elite General Contractors. No mention is made in the new permit about future parking plans, whether erecting another garage or putting parking spaces on a concrete slab.
Residents of 1448 West Diversey Parkway need only to walk across the street to catch an eastbound Route 76 bus; the westbound stop is less than half a block away, just west of the Diversey/Greenview intersection. The 9 and X9 buses have stops two-and-a-half blocks west at Diversey and Ashland, and can be used to connect with the Clybourn Metra station (UP-N and UP-NW trains) about 1.25 miles to the southeast. The nearest L station is the Diversey Brown/Purple Line platform about five blocks to the east.
